When you think of childhood, the imagination goes to butterflies and rainbows. But that isn’t always the case. Childhood may not always be as carefree as we hope for our children. They may experience the pains of divorce or the loss of a loved one, or pet.
When this type of situation occurs, it’s important to take the proper steps to reassure your child and make her feel secure.
Tell The Truth
Be honest. You want to keep the trust strong between your child. Use language appropriate for a child and keep it clear and concise.
Listen to Your Child
Older children might start a conversation, while younger children might demonstrate their thoughts in their play or even art drawings. Children are curious and may have very different questions than you may expect. Encourage your child to share without being pushy. Be patient and support one another as a family.
Keep a Routine
A lot of changes can occur when a loss happens. Keeping a child’s routine as normal as possible is important. Knowing when he eats meals, goes to school and bedtime routines help him to feel stable.
Be Available
Most of all be available. Your presence helps to make them feel safe, during a time that they may not feel secure. This is the most important thing you can do.
These are just a few of the ways you can help a child cope with grief or a difficult situation. If a child experiences sadness for extended period of time, it’s best to seek professional care.
